What Are the 12 Color Seasons? A Complete Guide

You've probably heard someone say "I'm a Winter" or "She's definitely a Spring." But what does that actually mean — and why does it matter when you're picking out a lipstick at Target?

Seasonal color analysis is a system that matches you to a palette of colors based on three characteristics of your natural coloring: undertone (warm, cool, or neutral), depth (light to deep), and clarity (soft and muted to bright and vivid).

The traditional system uses four seasons. The 12-season system goes further, breaking each season into three sub-seasons for a much more precise match. This is the system TruHue™ is built on — and it's the same framework used by professional color analysts worldwide.

Why 12 Seasons Instead of 4?

Four seasons is a good starting point, but it's too broad for real decisions. Imagine being told "you're an Autumn" and then trying to choose between 40 shades of brown lipstick. Some of those browns will make you look radiant. Others will make you look tired. The four-season system can't tell you which is which.

With 12 sub-seasons, the distinctions become specific enough to actually guide your shopping. A Soft Autumn wears muted, dusty tones. A Deep Autumn wears rich, saturated shades. A Light Autumn wears warm but delicate colors. Same season family — completely different palettes.

The same coral lipstick can be a YAY for True Spring, an OKAY for Light Spring, and a NAY for Cool Summer. That's the power of the 12-season system — it's specific enough to make real decisions.

The Three Attributes

Every season is defined by a unique combination of three attributes. Understanding these is the key to understanding why certain colors work on you and others don't.

Undertone — Warm, Cool, or Neutral

This is the most important attribute. Your undertone is the base warmth or coolness of your skin. Warm undertones have golden, peachy, or olive tones. Cool undertones have pink, blue, or red tones. Neutral sits in between. A mismatched undertone is the #1 reason a shade looks "off" — even if the color family is right.

Depth — Light to Deep

This is about contrast. Light seasons look best in colors that don't overpower them — soft pastels, blush tones, gentle warmth. Deep seasons can handle rich, saturated colors that would wash out someone lighter. If a lipstick feels "too heavy" on you, it's probably a depth mismatch.

Clarity — Muted to Bright

This is the one most people overlook. Muted seasons (like Soft Autumn and True Summer) look best in greyed-down, dusted shades. Bright seasons (like Bright Spring and Clear Winter) need vivid, saturated color. A muted person wearing a neon coral will look overpowered. A bright person wearing a dusty mauve will look drained.

The 12 Seasons

Spring

Spring seasons are warm-toned with a fresh, lively quality. Think golden sunshine, coral reefs, and blooming flowers.

Light Spring

Warm, light, and fresh

The most delicate of the Springs. Light Spring is warm-toned but gentle — think peachy pinks, warm ivories, and soft corals. Heavy, dark, or cool shades will feel overwhelming. Your superpower is looking radiant in colors others would call "too subtle."

True Spring

Warm and clear

The classic Spring. True Spring is warm, clear, and full of energy — golden tones, warm greens, and bright corals. You look amazing in the colors of a sunlit garden. Cool or muted shades will flatten your natural warmth.

Warm Spring

Rich warmth

The warmest of the Springs. Warm Spring lives in amber, marigold, warm bronze, and caramel. You can wear richness that would overpower a Light Spring. Cool tones are your enemy — they'll make your skin look sallow.

Summer

Summer seasons are cool-toned with a soft, elegant quality. Think overcast skies, lavender fields, and misty mornings.

Light Summer

Cool and delicate

The softest of the Summers. Light Summer wears soft lavenders, dusty roses, and powder blues like nobody else. Anything too warm, dark, or saturated will look harsh. Your colors are gentle and sophisticated.

True Summer

Cool and muted

The classic Summer. True Summer is cool, muted, and elegant — slate blues, mauves, and soft raspberries. Bright or warm shades will overpower your natural softness. You look incredible in colors that others might call "boring" — because on you, they're anything but.

Cool Summer

Cool and elegant

The coolest of the Summers. Cool Summer can handle blue-pinks, soft plums, and icy blues with ease. Any warm tone — even a slightly warm pink — will feel off. Your palette has a jewel-like quality that's quietly striking.

Autumn

Autumn seasons are warm-toned with a rich, grounded quality. Think falling leaves, spiced cider, and golden hour light.

Soft Autumn

Warm and muted

The gentlest of the Autumns. Soft Autumn wears sage, dusty gold, and soft terracotta beautifully. You share some overlap with Soft Summer — both of you live in the muted world. Bright, vivid colors will feel jarring on you.

True Autumn

Rich and earthy

The classic Autumn. True Autumn is warm, rich, and grounded — burnt sienna, olive, and warm copper are your best friends. Cool tones will make you look washed out. You're the person who looks incredible in that rust-colored sweater everyone else avoids.

Deep Autumn

Deep warmth

The deepest of the Autumns. Deep Autumn handles chocolate, mahogany, dark teal, and brick red with ease. Light, pastel, or cool shades will look washed out. You share depth with the Winter family but your warmth keeps you firmly in Autumn territory.

Winter

Winter seasons are cool-toned with a bold, high-contrast quality. Think icy landscapes, deep night skies, and jewel tones.

Cool Winter

Cool and deep

The deepest of the Winters. Cool Winter lives in navy, icy pink, true red, and charcoal. You can handle dramatic contrast that would overwhelm a Summer. Warm, earthy tones are your kryptonite.

True Winter

High contrast

The classic Winter. True Winter is the highest contrast season — black, pure white, emerald, and ruby. You look striking in colors that would be "too much" on anyone else. Muted, dusty, or warm tones will drain you.

Clear Winter

Cool and vivid

The boldest of the Winters. Clear Winter can wear electric blue, hot pink, and stark white without blinking. Your clarity means you need color that's vivid and undiluted. Anything muddy, dusty, or earthy will dull your natural brightness.

Finding Your Season

The best way to find your season is to look at the three attributes together. Ask yourself: does my skin have warmth or coolness? Am I light or deep? Do I look better in muted tones or vivid ones? Your answers will narrow it down quickly.
